Professionally Trained Youth Take on Challenge of Contemporary Broadway

 

SANTA CLARA, CA—January 18, 2012– Today, Starting Arts Dream Team (www.startingarts.com) announces their showcase performance, to open on Jan. 26.  Showcase 2012 will highlight the theatrical and musical talents of 43 professionally trained local youth from the Bay Area.

The showcase, which runs Jan. 26 and 27 at the Santa Clara High School Performing Arts Theatre, 3000 Benton Street in Santa Clara, is directed by Stephanie Renee Maysonave with musical direction by Amy Baker, and choreography by Kelly Velasquez.  For tickets and information, visit www.startingarts.com. On Wed., Jan. 25, there will be a performance for invited industry professionals only.

This local youth performing company will entertain audience members with renditions of popular songs, dances, and scenes from Wicked, In the Heights, American Idiot, Billy Elliot, Book of Mormon, Mary Poppins and much more.  In addition to traditional musical theater elements, Showcase2012 goes even further to highlight the Dream Team’s versatility by including rap, tap, live music, and puppetry.

 “Our Dream Teamers have risen to the challenge of contemporary Broadway,” said Maysonave, Dream Team Theatrical Director.  “We are thrilled to present these future stars.”

Sharing the stage with the Dream Team will be the newest Starting Arts performing group, Dream Team II.  Dream Team II, a select group of singers, dancers and actors ranging in age from 9 to 13 years, will perform a number from their upcoming production Starmites.  Starmites opens Feb.24.  For show information, visit www.startingarts.com.

The Dream Team, directed by Amy Baker, is a select group of young artists ranging in age from 12 to 18 years.  Through the Starting Arts program, team members receive weekly expert training in music (vocal), dance and theater, and monthly workshops with arts professionals.  Specialized workshops are designed to develop a variety of skills including auditioning, performance technique, stage combat, and stage management.  The team also participates in various community performances in the Bay Area.  At the end of May, the team will present its mainstage production of Les Miserables.
