Susann Suprenant has been directing, performing, playwriting, songwriting, teaching, and producing ensemble-based performance for the past 35 years.
Susann has recently returned to the Bay Area after living in Omaha, NE since 2000 where she worked as a theatre director and educator. In addition to producing original interdisciplinary performance work as co-founder and Artistic Director of ætherplough, Susann was a frequent guest director, playwright, and dramaturg at Omaha area theatres receiving many awards and nominations for Best Ensemble, Best Director, Best Dramatic Play, Best Dance Performance, Best Performance for a Young Audience, and Best Original Script. In Omaha, she served as Head of Directing for the Theatre Department, University of Nebraska at Omaha; she developed the Education and Community Involvement programs for the newly formed Omaha Performing Arts; and served as the Dean of Communications and Humanities at Metropolitan Community College where she developed a new theatre degree and helped found the nationally recognized Great Plains Theatre Conference to honor outstanding American playwrights and foster the work of new playwrights.
Susann currently resides in Santa Cruz County where, as a Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner, she teaches classes and helps clients move with greater ease using the Feldenkrais Method and mind-body approaches to chronic pain. She holds a B.A. in Communications from San Francisco State University, an M.A. in English from University of Nevada, Reno and a Ph.D. in Theatre from University of Oregon.
Susann believes theatre is an integral part of learning about ourselves and others; to grow in tolerance, curiosity, and compassion. She is delighted to be able to share this learning journey with student artists through Starting Arts.
