Karen Donnelly began performing in the 4th grade and has had music, dance and the stage in her blood every since. Not only a performer, she has worked in every aspect of music; from her own performances, to teaching and direction, to the business side, she has done it all. Due to the positive impact on her life that came from studying music and performing and from the wonderful teachers and directors she was so fortunate to have studied under, Karen has become a true advocate for musical education. She is thrilled to be using her extensive knowledge to pay forward that positivity to a new generation through the power of music.
She is a firm believer in the benefits to the emotional, intellectual and physical health that music can add to a child’s school experience. Her teaching style for music has an developmental emphasis on play, fun and imagination, and she combines engaging music learning activities that seamlessly provide a variety of brain development opportunities, including critical thinking, communication, social development, expression, and even math concepts.
An accomplished songwriter and lyricist, Karen has written, performed & recorded many original songs, across the genres of pop, rock, jazz and children’s music. Karen was the lead singer for several recording and touring original pop rock bands for more than a decade and is a National Anthem singer for major sporting events like the San Jose Sharks. Today, she remains very involved in community theater, holding many principle roles. Karen earned a B.A. in Clinical Psychology with a minor in Musical Theater Performance from SJSU. Karen was a featured singer in the San Jose State Jazz Dance Ensemble and the SJSU Concert Choir. She’s been teaching music and movement, songwriting, and private and group voice for over 20 years.
